Track and field is like four sports rolled into one. Sprinters will love racing short and intense events like the 100m and 200m, while distance runners will enjoy longer races, such as the 800m and the mile. You may also be interested in trying out the long jump, which is a field event that challenges athletes to jump farther than all their competitors. Athletes who have explosive strength will definitely want to check out the shot put, which is kind of like throwing a heavy metal ball as far as you can (without killing anyone).
No matter what events you choose, you'll have great teammates who will help you reach your goals.
Why should I join track and field?
Being involved in an extracurricular activity at Crystal is a great way to have fun and make new friends, and track and field is an ESPECIALLY good option because it offers so many unique opportunities to shine and grow as athletes while positively representing our school. It's no coincidence that Crystal Cougars who participate in track and field are among the fittest, friendliest, and smartest students on campus -- it's a sport that always attracts the best people!
What if I'm not good enough for track and field?
When you participate in track and field, you are joining the most perennially popular sport on the planet. You'll find out very quickly that people love it because it's a sport in which you can consistently amaze yourself when you work hard. Mr. Sturgis has trained top-level athletes, as well as beginners, and he knows that you can be successful too. No matter how good you are now, Mr. Sturgis will help you run faster, jump longer, and throw farther. He is extremely excited to coach the Crystal track and field team, because he knows that there is a lot of talent at our school just waiting to be developed. That includes YOU!
Mr. Sturgis has coached multiple school record holders at three different schools, including Crystal.
Is track and field only for 7th and 8th graders?
No! In fact, we advise all Crystal 6th graders to get involved in an extracurricular activity before the end of their first year of middle school. Joining the Cougar track and field team is a great way to establish a network of support, because being a part of Crystal Track and Field means being part of a motivated, academically focused, and ethically sound peer group. Students who participate in track and field as 6th graders usually love it so much that they continue to compete all the way through high school!
