Champions Again!
|
The 2018 track and field season came to a close on Wednesday, and the Crystal Cougars had a lot to celebrate. From start to finish, both the boys and girls teams performed at their highest levels, resulting in plenty of new school records and catapulting their squads to the district's top spots. Although the girls fell just short of the championship title, they were buoyed by some especially strong showings. 7th grader Marian Supapo improved her mile time by over 15 seconds at the meet, netting her a personal record of 6:00.66 and securing her title of 1600m school record holder for another year. Supapo's teammates Cristina Leanos and Valeria Perez also achieved improvements that gained them the #2 and #3 spots on the all-time list. Just prior to the girls' huge success, the boys "dream team" of Raekwon Bell, Emmanuel Garcia, and Isaac Cervantes easily nabbed the top 3 spots in the same race, all blasting through the finish line within a span of 8 seconds. Bell's 5:23.18 performance broke the previous school record set two years ago by Luis Calva, while Garcia set the 7th grade record with a time of 5:29.66. Garcia then went on to secure the 7th grade record in the 800m and the overall school record in the long jump.
In the sprints, Nigel Rogers continued his streak of success, blasting onto the school record boards at #1 in both the 100m and 200m, while in the 400m Paul Kasperek came away with the 7th grade record and Mikayla Rodriguez improved her time by 10 seconds from one year ago to nab the 3rd-all-time spot in the event. Kasperek was also part of a larger shakeup to the standing long jump record board, in which he now holds the 3rd-all-time place, only eclipsed by Alejandro Godinez's jump of 7-4 and Marcus Cunanan's leap of 8-4, and followed by Christian Balthazor at 6-9; all four boys broke the previous school record of 6-7 set in 2016. Olivia Thompson had her fun in the standing long jump as well, setting the girls school record for the third straight year, coincidentally beating her previous mark by 8 inches, just as she had in 2017. The meet was capped with fantastic performances in the 1600m relay, in which Crystal boys Rogers, Cunanan, Bell, and Anthony Marroquin notched another 1st-place victory and beat last year's school record by an astonishing 16 seconds; then, an exhilarating relay between Melanie Opolentisima, Rodriguez, Leanos, and Supapo earned the girls 1st place in the extremely close race and vaulted them to 2nd-all-time. It was a busy, rewarding season for the Cougars. With several longtime members of the team heading off to high school next year, the indelible positive effect they've had on our team is a testament to their dedication. In keeping with this legacy, the youngsters are primed to continue the Crystal tradition of success in 2019 and beyond. Great work, everyone! |

Cougars Debut with Double Wins
|
Weeks and months of preparation paid off for Crystal's track and field team on Wednesday in their annual scrimmage against the Wildcats of B. Gale Wilson. Cougars with sprinting aspirations flocked to the 400m relay, fielding an unprecedented six teams in the one race. In the mile, Cougars Raekwon Bell, Emmanuel Garcia, Isaac Cervantes, Jaydin Borromeo, Raymond Holt, Marcus Cunanan, Christian Balthazor, and Marian Supapo all demonstrated their distance dominance by beating out B. Gale's first finisher. In fact, Bell went on to place first in several events throughout the meet, including his 1600m win, the 400m, 800m, and shot put. Likewise, Supapo took first in all her races as well, with a close win in the 1600m relay that almost didn't happen when the team was short one member. Fortunately, 7th grader Amora Johnson, fresh out of soccer, volunteered to fill the spot and helped bring the Cougars to victory.
Rookie sprinters Nigel Rogers, Charly Reid, and Melanie Opolentisima placed exceptionally well in their first-ever races, with veterans such as Alejandro Godinez, Jonathan Lau, and Victor Mariano rounding out the top-notch roster that saw the boys take a 50-point lead and the girls take a 23-point lead over the course of the meet. Eighth grader Olivia Thompson, in her third and final year competing for Crystal, dominated the field events with a shot put distance of 34-8, while newcomer teammate Milan McCane followed in second place. On the boys' side, Bell - also a three-year athlete - took first with a throw of 36-11, with 7th grader Miguel Salas finishing in second, within just one inch of the 30-foot mark. Crystal's fantastic performance bodes well for the team as league championship trials approach in two weeks. In the meantime, the Cougars will continue to follow a rigorous training regimen while balancing the demands of state testing that is already underway. Luckily, as one of our runners put it, "Crystal athletes are always up for a challenge!" |

Half-Marathon Man
|
For 7th grader Marcus Cunanan, running 13.1 miles - exactly half the distance of a marathon - was like a walk in the park. "I'm very happy to hit the milestone I set nearly a month ago!" the first-year athlete said of his accomplishment, "I thought this was going to be a difficult run, but here we are running it with ease." Cunanan has steadily been building up his mileage ever since he joined the cross country team at the tail end of last season, and has seen his endurance skyrocket as a result. His latest record-setting run on Saturday took him along Fairfield's Linear Park Trail and into Solano Community College, where he felt so energized that he added on a run through the campus before returning to Crystal.
"I was tired at first, but by the time we got to the college, I felt great," Cunanan remarked. He is only the second Crystal athlete to achieve half-marathon status after Alexandro Meza accomplished the feat last year, but is the first 7th grader to do so. He now has Meza's 24.59-mile school record in his sights, and a whole year left to reach it. For his part, Cunanan plans to continue on the dedicated path that's brought him so much success already: "I think I'll just keep adding miles a little bit at a time, and then someday I'll be able to run a whole marathon." |

10k Club Keeps Growing
|
In their final two weeks of conditioning before the start of the 2018 season, Crystal Middle School's track athletes hit the pavement and made huge mileage gains that landed several of them in the coveted 10k range. Last week, Isaac Cervantes, Jaydin Borromeo, Paul Kasperek, Emmanuel Garcia, Marcus Cunanan, Marian Supapo, and Cristina Leanos all made the trek from Crystal out to the Jelly Belly Factory, where they refueled on candy samples before heading back and achieving new distance PR's - and a few shared school records - of 7.54 miles.
Just eight days later, Cervantes, Cunanan, and Borromeo were at it again, challenging themselves over Spring Break to be the first athletes to reach Fairfield High School since Alexandro Meza and Jared Rivera over a year earlier. They accomplished their goal, with Cervantes taking the 2nd all-time record at 9.47 miles and Cunanan notching the all-time 7th grade boys record of 9.22 miles. Think you've got what it takes to run far like these distance heroes? Or if speed is more your game, can you run fast like our awesome sprinters? Come be a part of something great! Our first day of practice is Wednesday, April 4th at 3:25pm in F-203. If you like making friends, having fun, and running fast, you won't want to miss out! |

XC and Track Teams Honored with Grant Award
|
Even without a bat or a ball, the Crystal Middle School cross country and track teams still managed to hit a home run last month when they were selected by KNBR and the San Francisco Giants to receive the Wells Fargo Step Up to the Plate for Education Award with a grant for $2,500. Yesterday, Mr. Sturgis and Mrs. Guernsey took a trip to AT&T Park with school record holders Marian Supapo and Alexandro Meza to accept the award in person. When they arrived, they were treated to a delicious breakfast and were given special track bags with water bottles to commemorate the event. The highlight of the day, though, was getting to meet the Giants' Golden Glove-winning shortstop Brandon Crawford, who emphasized the importance of hard work and dedication in achieving success. Since the Crystal Cougars are well known for some of their high-mileage workouts, Mr. Crawford confided they had him beat in that category: "I think I top out at about a mile, maybe a mile and a half," he said.
The cross country and track teams will be logging lots of miles pretty soon on brand-new GPS watches that will be funded by the grant. Additionally, the teams plan to buy a starter's pistol so that they can start their next season off with a bang - literally! |

Fullen, Leanos Reach 10k Milestone
|
Two of Crystal's top female runners put their endurance to the test last week with a trip all the way across Suisun City, all on their own two feet. 8th grader Cristina Leanos and 7th grader Paris Fullen both made the trek Thursday from Crystal to the edge of town on Highway 12 and back again, for a total distance of 6.50 miles - over a quarter-mile longer than a 10k, and nearly a mile further than the girls school record set one year ago. Both girls have been working hard since cross country ended, and have ambitions to hit double-digit mileage before the start of track season in April. Great job, ladies!

Cougars Conclude Season with Time Trial
|
Crystal Middle School's cross country athletes competed against themselves on Wednesday after a last-minute emergency left B. Gale Wilson unable to attend the two schools' final league meet of the season at the Suisun Watefront. With the course and volunteers already set up, the Cougars decided not to waste an opportunity to take one last shot at improving their own personal records. Abraham Perez closed out his season with a 17-second PR, which brought him the 7th grade school record and made him officially the 2nd Crystal athlete ever to complete the home course in under 9 minutes. Other athletes saw time improvements as well, but none more so than 8th grader Madayln Karcher, who achieved a nearly 3-minute PR over her previous performance on the course, bringing her time down to 16:29 from 19:19 within the span of less than 3 weeks.
With the 2017 cross country season now drawn to a close, Cougars who plan to compete on the track and field team in the spring should stay active throughout the winter - join the Crystal basketball team, or have fun exercising any way that works for you! If you have specific mileage goals you are trying to achieve before track starts, talk to Mr. Sturgis and he will help you create a plan. No matter how you decide to challenge yourself over the next few months, make sure to take some time to appreciate the journey! |

Crystal Athletes Take Top Spots at Falcon Invite, Doug Butt Memorial Race
|
With heavy smoke from the Wine Country fires forcing the cancellation of league competition for two consecutive weeks, some of Crystal's top runners found alternative ways to stay on top of their game, with two of them traveling as far as Sacramento to achieve optimal racing conditions. Cristina Leanos and Marian Supapo competed Saturday at the Falcon Middle School Invitational at Del Paso Regional Park, with finishing times of 10:49 and 10:55, respectively, on the 1.50-mile trail run.
Back in Fairfield four days later, the smoke subsided just enough for the annual Doug Butt Memorial Run to take place, and Crystal showed up strong, with Supapo taking the top spot in the 7th and 8th grade girls race, followed close by teammates Valeria Perez and Paris Fullen. In the boys race, Abraham Perez took 2nd place for 7th grade, while Jaydin Borromeo achieved 3rd in the 8th grade division. |

Return to Home Course Brings Big PR's
|
What a difference a year makes! That's certainly what 7th graders Amanda Johnston, Valeria Perez, Marian Supapo, and Christian Balthazor must have been thinking on Thursday as they notched impressive time improvements on their home course, racing it for the first time against Green Valley since the 2016 season. Striding through the Suisun Waterfront course in 10:29, Balthazor knocked 38 seconds off his previous best, while Supapo and Perez averaged 45-second improvements, scoring Supapo a new school record of 9:38 in the process. Johnston improved an astonishing 1 minute and 33 seconds over her previous year's performance, completing her race in 11:11. All four athletes credited their success to the hard work they have put in at practice.
Though only in his first year of cross country, 8th grader Isaac Cervantes finished first for the Cougar boys with a time of 9:07, vaulting him onto the school all-time list in the #2 spot. Also achieving the second-fastest record - but on the girls' leader board - was 8th grader Cristina Leanos, who completed the course in 10:27. |

Perez, Supapo Take First Against B. Gale Wilson
|
Temperatures well over 90 degrees did not stop the Crystal cross country teams as they visited B. Gale Wilson on Tuesday for a closely-contested pair of races that eventually saw 7th grader Abraham Perez take 1st place for the second week in a row, while simultaneously cutting down the school record set by Alexandro Meza last year by 3 seconds. 8th grader Antonio Pena stepped up to finish 2nd for the Cougar boys with a time of 9:08 on the 1.5 mile course. Afterward, Marian Supapo led her race once again, with the only finish under 10 minutes in the girls competition. She was followed by fellow 7th grade teammate Valeria Perez, who managed a 6-second PR despite the sweltering heat.

Boys and Girls Teams Dominate in First League Meet
|
The Crystal cross country teams cruised to early victories on Tuesday, facing Grange Middle School in both teams' first competition of the season. Becoming the very first racer to complete Grange's new, 1.4 mile course, newcomer Abraham Perez clocked a time of 9:33, followed closely by teammate Isaac Cervantes, who also finished in under 10 minutes. With the boys and girls races combined into one, Crystal's 3rd-place finisher was none other than 7th grade dynamo Marian Supapo. Supapo and teammates Cristina Leanos, Valeria Perez, and Paris Fullen kept a close pack throughout the race, with only about a 1-minute spread among the four athletes. This catapulted the girls to a win, while the boys achieved similar results, with the added bonus of attaining a perfect score of 15 points.

Strong Start for Crystal Cougars
|
With weeks to go until their first league competition, some Crystal cross country runners took matters into their own hands, racing in the Lagoon Valley and Ed Sias Invitationals over the past two weekends. Marian Supapo and Cristina Leanos earned medals for their performances at Lagoon Valley, while Brendan Duenas set a new PR despite record-breaking temperatures. Supapo also completed her first 2 mile race the following weekend, becoming the first Crystal athlete to brave the challenging, hilly Hidden Valley Park course at the famed Ed Sias Invite in Martinez.
With the season schedule now set, all eyes are on September 19th, when Crystal will go head-to-head with Grange at their first league competition of 2017. |

League Champions!
|
Months of hard work paid off in a big way for Crystal's track and field team at the middle school league championships on Wednesday, as both the boys and girls squads emerged triumphant over all the other schools in the district. With PR's in nearly every event, the Cougars put their dedication on display repeatedly over the course of the afternoon and evening. The ever-dependable distance trio of Nolan Nguyen, Raekwon Bell, and Alexandro Meza racked up points in the 1600m and 800m, with Nguyen just brushing the school record in the first event and breaking it in the latter -- both 1st-place performances for the 8th grader. Bell knocked approximately 10 seconds off his PR's in both events, then joined teammates Braulio Castillo, Mekhei Bryd, and David Dix to take 2nd place in the 4x400m relay and clinch the meet for the boys with a narrow but crucial 4 point lead over Green Valley. Byrd, participating in long jump for the first time, also took 2nd in that event.
A scorching girls 1600m resulted in yet another win and giant PR for 6th grade phenom Marian Supapo, who also took 1st in the 800m, soundly breaking the 3-minute barrier for the first time. Joining Supapo in the mile was 7th grader Cristina Leanos; in her debut distance race, the former sprinter Leanos took 2nd place in the race and 2nd place on Crystal's all-time list in the event with a time of 6:37.42. Olga Ochoa had a similar epiphany in another distance race, discovering she had what it took to finish 3rd in the 800m without ever having raced the event before. Ongrainna Harvey earned a PR and took 1st place in the 100m, and put forth a valiant effort in the 200m -- despite a severe knee pain leading to a limp, the 7th grader still took 1st in her heat, and 6th in the event overall. 8th grader Monifa Mills took 2nd in the event, and then immediately stepped up to fill the injured Harvey's 4x400m relay spot. Despite the back-to-back nature of the events, Mills anchored the relay team -- along with teammates Supapo, Leanos, and Mikayla Rodriguez -- to victory, taking first place in the final running event and securing a race time a quarter-minute faster than the team's previous best. A 2nd-place showing by Olivia Thompson in the shot put was icing on the cake as the girls cruised to the league title with a 23 point lead. We are extremely proud of all our track and field athletes -- congratulations on your well-deserved success! |

Crystal Does It Again
|
For the second week in a row, the Cougar track and field teams went toe-to-toe with other schools in the district and emerged victorious. Competing against both Suisun Valley and Oakbrook on Wednesday, Crystal's dedicated team showed a lot of improvement overall, as well as individually. Alexandro Meza, best known for his super-long-distance runs, PR'ed in the decidedly shorter 800m race by over 13 seconds, and in the mile by 10. 6th grader Luis Mah also improved his 800m time considerably, dropping 7 seconds in just one week. Mah also finished in the top 3 of the 400m, following teammates Nolan Nguyen and Braulio Castillo. Jaydin Borromeo had an impressive debut in the 100m, finishing in 15 seconds flat and highlighting an event that saw most of our boys earn half-second PR's or better. In the shot put, 7th grader Jonathan Lau threw over a foot and a half further than he had a week prior, while Nguyen also had an impressive showing with a 3-foot PR that earned him 1st place in the event.
The girls team also demonstrated significant improvement, with PR's in the mile and 800m by Marian Supapo, who was joined by fellow 6th grader Valeria Perez. Perez, running the events for the first time, nonetheless scored points in both races. Monifa Mills once again led the girls in the 100m with a half-second PR, an improvement matched by teammates Ongrainna Harvey, Jasmyne Murphy, and Gabrielle Caliz; PR'ing by over one second in the event were Amanda Johnston and Neveah Kilpatrick. 7th grader Olivia Thompson continued her domination of the shot put with a two-foot PR, with Kelechi Bennett and Paris Fullen rounding out the top 3. At the end of the day, both teams were triumphant, with Crystal's girls leading Suisun Valley 47-17 and Oakbrook 53-10. Our boys led Suisun Valley 56-8 and maintained a perfect score against Oakbrook, 64-0. |

Cougars Off to Strong Start
|
Facing a dearth of racing opportunities for middle schoolers in the area, the Crystal and B. Gale Wilson track teams met on Wednesday for some friendly competition before official contests begin next week. Both Crystal teams started strong, and maintained that momentum throughout the meet. After taking 1st in the 4x100m relay, the boys also swept the 1600m, led by Alexandro Meza and followed closely by fellow 8th grader Nolan Nguyen and 7th grader Raekwon Bell. 6th grader Marian Supapo finished about a minute later, taking 1st place for the girls team while claiming the school record with a time of 6:55.7.
Later highlights included Timothy Johnston leading another sweep in the boys open 100m, while Monifa Mills did the same for the girls. Mills was the only girl to stay under 15 seconds, although teammate Ongrainna Harvey came close, finishing her race at 15.00 exactly. In the 800m, Nguyen and Meza were joined by Mekhei Byrd for another 1-2-3 finish. Nguyen subsequently participated in the very next event, the 200m, which he also won, followed closely by Victor Morgane and Nile Garcia. In the shot put, 7th grader Olivia Thompson out-threw all the other girls - and most of the other boys - to land a 34-8, contributing 5 points to our girls' eventual 10-point win over B. Gale. Our boys also won their meet, with a score of 46 to 18. |

Meza Runs 14 Miles on 14th Birthday
|
While many people spend their birthdays relaxing at home or eating cake, 8th grader Alexandro Meza used his 14th birthday on Saturday to train toward another milestone: achieving a new mileage PR, and a new school record in the process. Starting his run at the Fairfield Cordelia Library, Crystal's top runner covered 14.7 miles through Rockville Hills Regional Park and Cordelia, reentering Fairfield to loop around Green Valley Middle School and finish his over-half-marathon feat at Rodriguez High School in under 2 hours.
Meza, a 2nd-year Cougar track athlete, has made terrific progress since he joined the team as a 7th grader, which he attributes to keeping a growth mindset, along with dedication to his training. "I run almost every day, and I set goals for myself. I plan to hit 16 miles before April, and I want to break 5 minutes in the mile by the end of track season," he said. Cougars who want to train with Meza and more of Crystal's best athletes are invited to attend conditioning sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays in F-203 at 3:25pm during the month of March. |

Milage Monsters
|
With just days left in the season, several Cougar athletes achieved a season-long goal of running all the way to Grange Middle School. The fact that they were undeterred by the over-5.50 mile round-trip journey was impressive enough, but even more so considering that most of them are 6th graders -- amazing!
Getting in some postseason training the following week, 8th graders Jared Rivera and Alexandro Meza and 7th grader Gabriel Wahid marked another milestone, running all the way to Suisun City's Walmart, hitting the 10k mark (over 6 miles) on their way back. Well on their way to meeting their goal of breaking 8 miles before the start of track season, the boys intend to complete at least one high-mileage run together every week. |

Big Win, PR's for Crystal at B. Gale
|
After Monday's photo run shenanigans at the Waterfront, the Cougar XC squad got back to work on Tuesday, traveling across town for their second and final showdown against B. Gale Wilson. In a clear indication that their weeks of training are really paying off, the Cougars were rewarded with huge race performance improvements, with many athletes achieving PR's of a minute or more. Marked by the return of 8th grader Alexandro Meza after being sidelined for weeks by a broken arm, the boys team won the meet with 8 of our runners finishing the 1.50 mile race in under 10 minutes.
After finishing in 2nd place to B. Gale runner Cynthia Laughman at their first showdown in September, 6th grader Marian Supapo fought her way back to the top, earning 1st place and a 9:35 PR in the process. The next day, Supapo went on to earn 1st place yet again, at the Doug Butt Memorial Run at Laurel Creek Park, running a mile PR of 6:55. Several of her teammates joined her at the annual race, representing Crystal across 3 divisions. |

Crystal Boys and Girls Win Final Home Meet
|
With a perfect score of 15 points, Crystal XC's boys team defeated Matt Garcia Academy on Tuesday, while the girls team enjoyed a victory as well. Although race times stayed relatively flat due to fewer competitors, 6th grader Marian Supapo managed to cut her school record down for a third consecutive time, finishing 2 seconds faster at 10:22 and cementing her status as Crystal's school record holder for 2016. Running in their first races ever, 8th grader Alexander Perez-Sanchez and 6th grader Valeria Perez held their own, finishing as part of Crystal's top 5 and scoring points that helped catapult their team to victory.
The next day, Perez-Sanchez and Supapo joined teammates Jesse Gaona, Bosstyn Wommack, and Gabriel Wahid for our longest run so far this season, covering over 5 miles on foot as they traveled from Crystal to Dover Park, past Anna Kyle Elementary, Armijo High, and back to school through the Suisun Waterfront. Running in new places is one of the best parts of cross country, and our runners capped off a great week on Saturday by traveling to Sacramento for the Falcon Middle School Invitational. Along with the change of scenery, Crystal achieved several huge PR's, including a well-deserved 30 second improvement by Wahid, as well as converted PR's of over a minute by Supapo, Gaona, and Aiyana Hernandez Zuniga. |

Busy Week As Cougars Race in Two Cities
|
Several members of Crystal's cross country team proved their fortitude this week as they competed in two races within the span of three days. At the league meet versus Green Valley on Tuesday, 7th grader Jaydin Borromeo and 8th grader Jonathen Sanchez both improved their personal bests by over half a minute in the boys race, while teammates Tyeese Chappell and Aiyana Hernandez Zuniga improved by similarly impressive amounts in the girls competition. Meanwhile, Marian Supapo set a new school record for the second week in a row, bringing her time down to 10:24 on our 1.40 mile course.
On Thursday, the Cougars got the unique opportunity to race against schools in another league as they were invited by Benicia Middle School to race on the BMS home course at Community Park in Benicia. Braving windy conditions and hilly terrain that aren't often experienced in Suisun, Crystal's runners were up for the challenge -- particularly Supapo, who ran her first sub-7:00 mile in the first race of the day. The boys, even after the tiring work of running multiple races, still made a point to climb and conquer Benicia's infamous PRAB hill before they went home. |

Crystal Wins First League Meet
|
After a forfeiture by Matt Garcia Academy the previous week, the Crystal XC team finally got their chance at league competition on Tuesday in a matchup against B. Gale Wilson that saw Crystal's boys team emerge victorious. 8th grader Alexandro Meza led the pack, finishing almost a minute ahead of B. Gale's first finisher.
In the girls race, 6th grader Marian Supapo proved herself a force to be reckoned with, finishing ahead of nearly every B. Gale girl, including lots of 7th and 8th graders. On Thursday, the Cougars celebrated their win at the It's-It outlet, with ice cream sandwiches that didn't seem to impede the second half of their workout too much. |
